“I was taught to compete with others before I learned how to grow without resenting them.”
As a child, I was told to embrace “healthy competition.” But I only understood it as trying to beat everyone else.
Every result brought the same question:
“He can do it. Why can’t you?”
His achievements became measures of my worth. I sacrificed sleep, childhood, and peace, believing I would finally be enough if I surpassed him.
Instead, I began resenting people who had never been my enemies.
I didn’t hate them. I hated the comparisons, the pressure, and the feeling that their success made me smaller.
I was losing friendships with people who had never been my rivals.
Years later, I understood that healthy competition isn’t about defeating others. It’s about learning from them, admiring their success, and becoming better without questioning your own worth.
Someone can run faster, score higher, or arrive first without making your journey meaningless.
Real competition is becoming better than the person you used to be.
But I had spent so long trying to win that I forgot how to celebrate someone else’s success.
Maybe growing up means unlearning the belief that someone else must lose for us to matter.
Because the most painful competition teaches us to hate the people we could have grown alongside.
So, did you ever learn to compete in a healthy way or are you still unlearning what you were taught?
